My Step-By-Step Guide to Attracting an Audience on Social Media
You can do it anywhere!
“He’s amazing with that scooter. How old is he?”
“He’s three.”
The kid peers out from behind his mother’s legs.
He watches as my son coasts around the sidewalk like a circus act.
“Wanna go say hi?”
He shakes his head at first.
He doesn’t have much of a choice, though.
My boy cruises to a stop and waves as only toddlers do.
“Hi!”
“…Hey.”
“Bye!”
He scoots off again.
Out pops the kid from behind his mother as he takes off to catch up, grinning ear-to-ear.
There are some things that are universally true.
Engage with the people that you resonate with.
Do it regularly as if you’re actually going to stick around.
Eventually, others will take notice.
Gurus say “comment under big names to grow”.
They’re right, but…
Don’t just randomly comment on any person who has a large following.
It has to be a genuine response with a thoughtful comment.
Imagine if you just butted in other people’s conversations and kept walking.
That’s exactly what 99% of the people who use this advice do.
If you’re one of them, you’re doing it wrong.
Here’s how I do it.
Are you ready?
Read the post. If it resonates, go to step 2.
Hit “reply” and say what’s on your mind like you’re standing there responding in person.
Check out other responses and do the same if they’re worth adding to.
Lather, rinse, repeat with the next post.
Do this for 15 minutes a day, once or twice a day.
This is the social butterfly routine, and it works wonder.
Yes, you have to be intentional about it.
No, you don’t have to have an agenda of building a following.
That happens naturally if you actually care about the topic and the people.
It’s not complicated.
Just be yourself everywhere you are.
That’s how you find your inner circle.
P.S. Proof in the pudding
3 years to reach 1000 followers on LinkedIn.
18 months to pull it off on TwiX.
10 months to do it on Medium.
I’ve started applying it to Substack Notes and BlueSky.
I wonder how long it will take to do it with these two?
