Legacy isn't just about content
You don’t need a funeral to rethink the whole thing
Life comes at you fast.
Wife. Two kids. Two dogs. Four cats.
Not to mention a full-time career to top it all off.
With this lifestyle, someone, somewhere always needs your attention right then and there.
Some days it’s like falling down a flight of stairs after the kids dumped their entire Lego set on each step…
But then there are moments when time just… stops.
The event that halted everything
“Dad [has] chest pains and sweating at hospital now. Not a heart attack.”
After that, all mental activity froze until I got to work.
Then for the rest of the day, it felt like I had chugged a warehouse full of Red Bull as my mind raced through endless scenarios…
What if this was it? What would we do? What would we remember of his life?
Throughout the day, my brother updated me on dad’s progress.
Observation needed. Transfer to the main campus. Overnight stay required…
I picked my brother and mom up from the house and rushed to the hospital.
He was in surgery. Heart attack upon arrival. Immediate operation.
He made it through. Three stents. A week of on-site recovery needed.
Mom didn’t leave his side. My brother and I shuttled between hospital and house as we juggled our other responsibilities.
While we were cool customers on the surface, we were knots of anxiety and stress.
But something he said during that time yanked at my heartstrings harder than anything:
“I’m surrounded by family and friends. That’s the best feeling, no matter where I am in life.”
The reminder I didn’t want to need
We spend our entire lives chasing success, security, and social capital…
but rarely do we ever stop to ask the obvious question:
What will I leave behind that actually matters?
Is it the possessions amassed, the prestige garnered, the pictures captured?
Or is it deeper, something that tells the story of who you really are?
That’s why I started building my digital heirloom.
It’s not just about the content.
It’s certainly not about going viral for a buck.
It’s about creating something that lasts beyond my time here, something my kids can learn from, grow with, and remember me by.
Luckily, you don’t need to wait for a frightening event to start.
This is your invitation to begin.
If you choose this path…
Over the next few days, I’ll share the biggest obstacles I faced to get the ball rolling.
You game? Then “stay awhile and listen”…
Because this isn’t just about writing.
It’s about remembering who you are…and becoming someone worth remembering.
Identity. Intent. Iteration.
Welcome to the start of your digital legacy.
P. S.
This is my first email in my welcome series to send to new subscribers…none of you of course!
It’s taken me this long to bite this bullet. I’m no John Wick, but I’m looking down the barrel of the gun without fear now.
When you’re ready, you’re ready. You just feel it.
Bear with me on this process!
