When They Say "Build in Public", This Isn't What They Mean

It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt...

You see them everywhere:

  • sitting at restaurants and bars

  • shuffling along the sidewalk or stumbling into the streets

  • arms outstretched and standing in weird, awkward, ungainly positions

sometimes alone, and sometimes in groups…

Every single one of them is oblivious to what’s going on around them because they’re trying to get that perfect angle, livestreaming, or posing like they’re on the catwalk for Victoria’s Secret…

Influencers.

To be fair, they’re mostly harmless and just having a bit of fun in public.

Heck, I occasionally review the places I go to eat and take pictures of my food.

It becomes a problem when people do it solely for fame and/or fortune without respect for others.

Some examples:

  • the guy who got arrested in South Korea for being incredibly offensive in every way possible

  • that kid who sped his lambo down the highway in pouring rain and wrecked with his friend filming the whole thing in the passenger seat

  • the sick weirdo who sprayed insecticide on vegetables at the grocery store as a prank for his 15 minutes of infamy

Just because you can share your life and antics 24/7, doesn’t mean you should.

Not everything you do in life has to be broadcast to the world.

You are not in your own little version of “The Truman Show”.

Nobody revolves around you to serve your whims and build your perfect little idyllic life.

But like Jim Carrey’s character discovers, you’re a part of something greater.

  • You have obligations, responsibilities, chores…

  • You have dreams, aspirations, goals…

  • You have a purpose in your life…

How you choose to live it is largely based on how you see the world based on your background, your values, and your beliefs.

The incredible thing about that is that you have the power to change for the better.

It’s not easy, but it’s simple.

And influencers like the ones I mentioned above certainly could do with a bit of soul-searching.

“The unexamined life is not worth living.”

Socrates

How you do it is up to you, but it requires discipline, motivation, and a large dose of self-awareness.

Up to this point, I’ve been outlining what I’ve done in my life.

This newsletter is dedicated to sharing aspects of my mental, physical, and emotional processes and systems focused on steady self-improvement.

Take one aspect and split it into many.

It’s a prismatic process.

The digital heirloom rests on this concept.

Each aspect is in the form of a seven-day challenge.

To date, I’ve completed mostly mental and physical ones.

I’m putting together the first component to share with you.

I hope it inspires you to include something similar in your digital footprint through writing as well as video.

That’s the kind of influence I want to have on the world.

Stay tuned…
